Our Impact

This is where we share our work. Legislative reports highlight measurable outcomes, Return on Investment (ROI) studies look at value and cost savings, and case studies bring real stories from across Michigan to life. Collectively, they show the impact of this work and why it matters.

Legislative Reports

The Michigan DataHub compiles yearly reports from funded projects, summarizing measurable outcomes aligned with project objectives. These reports facilitate effective evaluation of project effectiveness, enhancing transparency in education funding.

Return on Investment Studies

The Michigan Data Hub periodically conducts a Return on Investment (ROI) and Potential Cost Savings Study to assess its impact. This serves as a benchmark goal for DataHub, driving efforts to surpass projected savings by eliminating duplicate integrations, connecting currently disjointed systems, and streamlining state reporting processes.

2024 The Michigan Data Hub: A Retrospective Study

This follow-up study to the original Strategic Alignment and ROI Study completed in 2016, provides a unique opportunity to compare the actual return on investment (ROI) results with the original estimates. For this study, we examined the investments, cost savings, and other features that provide value back to schools and, ultimately, Michigan taxpayers for their investment.

2016 The Michigan Data Hub A Strategic Alignment and ROI Study

As Michigan school districts continue to improve student outcomes through the use of instructional support technologies, managing data has become an integral part of district operations. In all, data management by districts requires both personnel effort and technology costs totaling over $160 million per year statewide. More than $61 million per year is spent on data quality, data completeness, and other general data management tasks, while $64 million per year is spent enabling key internal systems within districts to talk to each other. An additional $38 million per year is spent by districts to support federal and state compliance reporting.

Case Studies & Stories

The Michigan DataHub is periodically featured in white papers and articles published within both the community and industry. These publications highlight the DataHub's innovative initiatives, showcasing its impact and contributions to the education sector.

Connecting Schools Across Michigan with a Real-Time Statewide Data System

This Ed-Fi case study breaks down how Michigan DataHub built the connective tissue for statewide education data. One standard. Hundreds of districts. Real time. Read the story behind the platform that changed how Michigan schools share, report, and act on data.

Snack-Pack: Turning School Transfers into Seamless Hand-Offs

When a child changes schools, the clock starts ticking. Every day without the right records is a day without the right support. That's why Michigan built Snack-Pack, a portable student data records service powered by the Ed-Fi Data Standard, so that tutoring, special education, and language services follow students from day one, not weeks later. More than 250 districts. 1.5 million records. And 90% of transferring students getting the help they need within 24 hours. This is what it looks like when data does its job.

Bringing Two Data Standards Together to Power Student Success

This 1EdTech blog tells the story of how Michigan DataHub brought OneRoster and the Ed-Fi Data Standard together to give educators a single, seamless view of student data. Less time pulling reports. More time helping kids. See how Michigan is showing the rest of the country what integrated data looks like in practice.

Moving Michigan schools to the Cloud

This case study, produced by the Center for Digital Education with AWS, shows how one regional agency's bet on the cloud became the backbone for statewide education initiatives including Michigan DataHub. Read it to see what's possible when local leadership thinks bigger than its own backyard.
